Canary Seed

This small, nutritious grass seed originated in the Canary Islands,             off the northwest coast of Africa.  Finches, siskins, juncos, sparrows, cowbirds, indigo buntings, (and of course canaries) love it!

Although Canary seeds have been traditionally used for birdseed,                      they are gaining popularity as a "new superfood" for people               due to their high protein content, minerals, and peptides.

Canary seeds, Canary grass, and Canary birds are all named for their native Canary islands.  The islands themselves, however, are named for the large number of dogs (canariae) who once inhabited the islands.
