Millet
This versatile grain was first cultivated in China around 8000 BC!
Today millet is a staple in many countries, and a primary ingredient in cereal, porridge, and beverages.
In the U.S. it has recently gained popularity as a gluten-free alternative to wheat.
Backyard birds love millet!
Sparrows, doves, juncos, towhees often flock to feeders to grab some of this nutritious grain.
Neighborhood quail may act as a clean-up crew, eating spilled millet from the ground under feeders.
